Fenua often includes not only the meaning of a geographical and physical island or country, but also the meaning of belonging and the basis of identity. On the other hand, motu simply means a geographical and physical island.
たんに地理的・物理的な島や国という意味だけでなく,日本語の「郷土」のように帰属意識,アイデンティティの拠りどころという意味を含むことが多い.Toku fenua ko Nanumea. 私はナヌメア出身です.(私の島はナヌメアです.)
