A general term for the coconut palm. Also refers to its fruit. It is one of the most important plants in Tuvaluan life and is used for a wide range of purposes, including food, drink, building materials, and everyday objects.

A highly useful plant found throughout Tuvalu. There are both wild pandanus (fala vao) and varieties cultivated for food (fala kai). The fruit is eaten, while the leaves are used for a wide variety of purposes, including thatching, mats, baskets, plates, fans, and costumes for traditional dances. An evergreen tree that has long grown naturally throughout Tuvalu. The name of the outer island Nukufetau (literally “island of fetau”) is also derived from this tree. Its timber is very durable and is used to make a variety of wooden items, including canoes, paddles, and ladders.
ツバル全域に古くから自生する常緑高木.離島ヌクフェタウ(Nukufetau:「フェタウの島」)の名の由来にもなっている.材は非常に丈夫で,カヌー,パドル,梯子など,さまざまな木製品の材料として用いられる.

A banana variety that produces small fruit. It grows well even in the harsh environment of Tuvalu and is an important food source. Although there are various kinds of bananas, futi is also used as a general term for bananas. See also: inisi, misiluki, tamatama i lima.

An evergreen shrub that bears white fruit. In the past, the juice squeezed from the crushed fruit was used as eye drops. See also: gahu.
