fātele volume_up
n. the traditional dance of Tuvalu
A representative form of traditional song and dance of Tuvalu. It is performed at community events and festive occasions, expressing social cohesion and collective cultural memory. The vocal performance consists of three parts: pulotu, the male lead carrying the main melody; leo fafine, the female vocal part; and malū, the low bass part that supports the ensemble. These layers overlap to create a rich, full-bodied sound. Rhythm is produced primarily through percussion: several men strike a wooden box (pusa) placed at the center with their palms to articulate the low rhythmic line, while higher-pitched rhythms are added by striking an aluminum biscuit tin (kāpa) with sticks (kautā). The lyrics cover a wide range of themes, including attachment to homeland and islands, tradition and ancestors, moral teachings, and love. Fatele is also performed within Tuvaluan diaspora communities abroad, where it functions as a cultural medium for transmitting values and history to younger generations.
