Used as a torch for night fishing, particularly for catching flying fish. It is also used to singe the hair from a pig after it has been slaughtered for food. In the cultivation of pulaka, 'lama are arranged in a circle around the plant once it has grown to a certain size and secured in place with four to six stakes, with compost placed inside the enclosure. As the plant grows, additional lama may be stacked on top to form a cylindrical enclosure. See also: 'lama.

A traditional method of flying-fish fishing in which people go by canoe beyond the reef and use a lama (a torch made of bundled dry, brown coconut fronds). See also: lama.

Made by splitting and bundling coconut spathes (taume) and tying the bundle with thin strips of pandanus leaf (laufala). Koch (1961) also describes a method in which the bundle is wrapped with kaka. Once lit at the end, it continues to smoulder for a long time and is used to light lama during night fishing for flying fish.
