Once common on Nanumea Atoll, this tree was severely affected by an infestation of kō leaf-eating moth larvae. It is an important tree for coastal protection, providing shade, and serving as habitat and nesting sites for seabirds. Its durable wood is used for a wide variety of purposes, including house posts, furniture, climbing sticks, paddles, drums and slit gongs, and traditional wooden pillows. It is also used to make waterproof boxes used by fishermen. The flowers are used for garlands, while the bark and other parts of the tree are used for medicinal purposes and in traditional magic.
