ツバル全島において重要な文化的植物である（Thaman et al. 2012）．花冠，首飾り，腕飾りなどに用いる．葉は土窯で魚を調理する際の包み材となる．かつては薬用，黒魔術，遺体の防腐処理にも使われた（Thaman et al. 2012）．
An important cultural plant throughout Tuvalu (Thaman et al. 2012). It is used for making flower garlands, necklaces, and arm ornaments. The leaves are used for wrapping fish when cooking in an earth oven. In the past, it was also used for medicinal purposes, black magic, and the preservation of human remains (Thaman et al. 2012).
